IS SIMPLE FAITH POSSIBLE?
Humans gravitate toward and crave simplicity. Faith is anything but simple. Faith is complicated by suffering, violence, science, and so on. Is simple faith possible? It would seem not. After all, if it is too simple, can it really be called “faith”? However, we need some kind of simple starting point, some fixed points to help us get our bearings with regard to faith.
WHO IS GOD?
The very question “Who is God?” assumes from the beginning that we are talking about a who, rather than a what. This is significant because Christian spirituality is a process of getting to know God. And the most important thing to know about God is that God is a community.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HUMAN?
In this third message of the Simple Faith series, we look at the question of human uniqueness and doughtiness. Humans have an oughtness, a way we ought to be in the world. This ideal comes from having been made in the image of God. Whatever the image of God may refer to, it is seen most clearly in Jesus.
WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL ABOUT JESUS?
In this installment of Simple Faith, we look at the central figure of Christianity: Jesus. Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead. This is the foundational claim of the church and the most important thing Christians believe about him. We look at why the resurrection is so important and why we believe in the resurrection when it is simply impossible.
WHAT IS "FAITH" ANYWAY?
The word ‘faith’ can be a slippery term because it gets used in a variety of ways to mean many different things. In the Bible, faith refers to three things: the body of teachings about Jesus (the faith), the posture of our hearts toward Jesus (belief), and a way of life informed by the story of Jesus (faithfulness).
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
In this final message of the Simple Faith series, we look at the importance and significance of baptism. We also ponder how baptism charts a course for a life of faith, seeing as it is an act of repentance, of worship, of fellowship with the church, and of storytelling.
